WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?

I’ve got a Mercedes C220 CDI.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR?

It was an old Moggie [Morris] 1000 Traveller. That was so long ago I can’t remember.

I remember it only had three gears on it anyway.

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST/WORST CAR?

The best was an S-type Jaguar; that was a really nice car.

The worst car was probably an old Ford Prefect. It had a big hole right through the side of the door. I used to call in the Moon Bus.

I remember one day putting the hand brake on and the whole lot came off in my hand. This was long before the days of MOT and I remember for about three months it sat on the passenger seat.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM CAR?

I must admit I do like the Bentley.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A GOOD DRIVER?

Yes I would. I’m not a fast driver. I’m steady.

WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN YOUR GLOVEBOX?

There’s always some CDs in their and a couple of packets of fishing hooks because I’m a keen angler you see. In fact the boot is always packed with fishing tackle, all except the rods which I put in when I need them.

WHAT DRIVES YOU MAD BEHIND THE WHEEL?

People who have got no concern for other drivers, and people that use their mobile phones while driving. I think it’s so stupid because they don’t realise when they’re driving they slow everything up. You can’t read minds. You don’t know what they’re going to be doing.

WHAT'S THE BEST MUSIC TO DRIVE TO?

I’d say Wurzel music [laughs]. As long as you’re not singing along with it.

Also You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling by the Righteous Brothers, because that’s my wife’s favourite as well. It’s the song that has been with us for years.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRASH?

Not a serious one. I’ve had one or two little brushes.

A long time ago I think I pulled out on somebody and then changed my mind.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR PERFECT PASSENGER?

I quite like driving with Tom [Banner, fellow Wurzels musician]. He doesn’t criticise your driving and he’s a good, safe driver as well.

WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE IN A CAR?

It’s when I was living in Devon. I was coming home from a gig one night and I found that the whole road was flooded. I tried several ways to get home; eventually found one and I got out to check to see if I could see how deep the water was. When I looked over the wall into the field, the water was lapping around the top of a wall.

There I was in the middle and I had to back it up this windy old stone bridge, which was quite harrowing in the pitch dark.

That’s the trouble with flood water at night. You just don’t know how deep it is.

WHO CLEANS YOUR CAR, AND HOW OFTEN?

I generally take it to one of these Polish places. They’re very good value for money. I take it about once a fortnight.
